This 1972 2.4T Sportomatic was sourced in the USA. There was plenty of discussion on the forums about the lack of an external filler and it’s build date; March 1971, several months before the 72 model year began. A really rust free shell was just what I was looking for so snapped it up despite the contradictions. When the car arrived at the Early 911 workshops I put it straight up on the ramp and was stunned to find it in perfect condition underneath.

The shell was stripped bare, revealing some areas of minor corrosion, before sending away to have the paint burnt off, alkaline dipping and Ecoating. The shell is now painted in the original colour: Fraise

The car now has steel ST rears arches, GRP ST front wings, bonnet and front and rear bumpers. The interior has a full welded in cage. The motor is a full on 2.5 ST spec, with twin spark ignition, Pauter rods, JE pistons in 89 m Mahle barrels on a lightened and balanced 66 mm crank, RSR spec MFI, RSR spec cams, lightweight GRP engine “tinware”.  A rebuilt 915 gearbox is fitted with a ZF LSD

The paint scheme above is a replica of the works cars used in the 1972 Monte Carlo Rally, driven by Bjorn Waldegaard (right) and Gerard Larrouse
